    Being A Girl Is Fun

I get to go prom dress shopping tomorrow.

    Wheeeee!

While my opinion is not Reagan's favorite, she has gotten past the stage where anything I like was an automatic "Ew".  She'll at least consider what I say now before she disagrees with me.

She is, however, a big fan of my bank account so I get to go.

For about a month she's been pinning dresses on a Pinterest board and as we were looking them over the other night, a pattern became clear:  she likes vintage, classic looks like this one.Source

    Isn't it gorgeous?

When you're 5'10" though, shopping vintage via the internet is a little risky.  Women used to be shorter and I worry that it would come and the fit would be all wrong.  Plus the price on vintage is a bit more than I want to spend for a prom dress.

On the other hand, when you live in a town that only has two malls the selection is a little limited and no one wants to show up in a dress that someone else has on.

    The horror!

We're going out tomorrow to see what's available around here and try things on to see what styles look best on Reagan but she already had her eye on one we found online.  We googled "vintage inspired prom dresses" and found this great site called Blue Velvet Vintage that has a lot of new dresses that look like old dresses.

This one is my favorite.Just look at the back!

    It is amazing.

Too bad, I don't have a prom coming up.

Reagan has her eye on this one.

It's black lace over pink and I think it has a vintage feel, but is a lovely modern interpretation of this actual vintage dress that I found the first vintage site.

    So pretty.

Of course, if Reagan truly wants vintage, I could see if my mom still has this classic look in the basement.

Hmmmmm . . . on second thought I don't think I was really going for "classic".  That dress screams 1987.

You all have fu looking at dresses! I'm with Reagan, I love the classic looks. All the ones you have shown here are beautiful so no matter what is chosen Reagan will be stunning on prom night. Picking out girls clothes for prom is way more fun for girls than boys so enjoy it.

You are SO right about 5'10 not fitting into vintage. Back in Los Angeles there was a string of shops that carried that sort of thing. NONE of fit a tall, thin girl. Your arms would hang out of the sleeves and the waist would be riding up around your rib cage. The great thing about LA was that there was also a string of shops where you could try on the cast-off's from all the red carpet premiers. THAT was fun. Do you like this Oscar look, or this one? Hmmm, how about this one? I've never had more fun dress shopping!

First of all, I find it terrifying to realise that teenagers are using pinterest. I mean, sure I knew it was bound to happen. They probably were the first users. But it makes me feel old.

Secondly, I would agree with the vintage look. And get something on the internet if you have to. My prom dress was a burnt orange mermaid halter dress. It was the best I could do at the time.

I love that dress with the cool back! Kids just get more and more expensive don't they. Mine aren't anywhere close to prom dresses or designer shoes, unless you count Justice.

Ha-love your dress. My girls see my prom picture and tell me it looks like I was getting married. Have fun shopping for a dress!

LOVE the lace a-line dress - it's gorgeous! I hope she finds something that both of you will be happy with. :)

We're starting the prom-dress-shopping at our house, too! We looked at a few in Omaha last weekend, but the stores don't seem to have all their dresses out. Reagan has great taste! I think mine is looking at long, black, and beaded, much like the one you pictured! Good luck to you! Please keep us posted. (now I'm off to check out that Blue Velvet Vintage site - hadn't come across that one yet!)

Lorri - actually I can not WAIT to take Hayden tux shopping. I'm thinking he'll clean up nice. :)

mj - I can not even fathom what proms in L.A. must look like. Big city life does have its advantages sometimes.

Miriam - burnt orange mermaid? I love it.

Abby - I loathe Justice. Faith is just about over it and I'm so glad!

Joyce - I'm sure you looked very beautiful - for the eighties. ;)

    Tabitha - me too!

Mindy - oooooh! I love the long dresses. I can't take talk Reagan into one. Have fun with yours.

Those are GORGEOUS! And now I'm going to go stalk that sight and then make my friends hold a grown-up prom so I can justify buying everything on it.

Krista - hopefully it will be a FUN search.

    Lisa - thanks. :)

Gma - I think it's in May and yes, same boy which means no high heeled shoes.

Love the vintage looks! Have you tried Ruby Begonias at 13th & P or Rialto Extra at 17th & O? They have some great vintage stuff. Don't know if they have formal dresses, but it might be worth a try so she can try some on!

One belated tip as well . . .check the costume rental shops and college theaters for vintage dresses. They would have had to make vintage looking clothes for college students and they might be available to rent.

And maybe this is a good place to push for the standardization of women's sizes. Why do I wear size 12 in one brand and size 6 in another? Stupid vanity sizing . . . .
